imposter

april 2021

part of the mother tongue online exhibition in response to the pitt rivers museum.

99Hx109Wx47D (cm).

plaster hollow, handpainted bricks.

sand from bournemouth beach and liquid clay (locally sourced in Norfolk) 'mortar'.

public performance documented by video (wide shot and POV - side by side)

inspired by an article found online from february 1858 ‘what is a brick’ written for the poole and Dorset herald paper.

this piece plays with my ties to the location of this work (Dorset) and my family history of tradition brick making specialising in reclaimed bricks (Norfolk, specifically Norfolk red bricks).

humour and a sort of inside joke of the bricks being hollow and completely ineffective as a brick even though appearing to be normal along side of the character i played of a trades person in the live performance; encourages viewers to think and look closer at what they’re viewing, as all is not as seems.

the piece also reinforces the way modern structures are no longer built for the environment, by locally sourced materials and local trades people unlike how it was in the past.
